Overview

Summary:

The Development Manager will be responsible for leading project development efforts to create shovel-ready solar and energy storage projects. The Development Manager will report to the Director of Development for our West region and would support efforts to expand Strata’s portfolio across CAISO and other WECC markets. Project developers are charged with managing between 3-5 projects and all associated development activities from land siting and interconnection through to permitting and origination. The position requires frequent travel to project locations to meet with landowners, permitting officials, and local officials.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prospecting: Support Director of Development in creating an internal business case to explore new markets and drive new siting campaigns. Includes identifying merchant and commercial opportunities, forecasting revenue streams, and identifying regulatory processes and rules that could support solar and storage project development. Experience in WECC markets a plus.

  • Land Acquisition: Coordinate with internal land acquisition team, contracted land managers, and personally conduct land acquisition duties including identifying prospect sites, researching land ownership, contacting landowners, running desktop site diligence, and preparing and executing necessary paperwork.

  • Electrical Interconnection: Coordinate with Strata’s engineering and interconnection team and consultants to work with utilities and ISOs to file interconnection applications, drive electrical interconnection studies, and advance multiple projects through the process towards achieving signed interconnection agreements.

  • Permitting: Research all required permits for selected sites, coordinate with Permitting Manager, consultants and attorneys to prepare, review and submit permit applications and other filings, and represent Strata at permitting hearings, including providing expert witness testimonies when necessary.

  • County & Local Affairs: Build positive stakeholder relationships with state & county officials, local residents, and industry groups to bolster support for project permitting efforts.

  • Origination: Support efforts to secure project offtake, including preparing and submitting bids for RFP/RFI, supporting offtake contract negotiations, and educating customers on solar and storage and how Strata projects would benefit the customer.

  • Project Management: Manage project budgeting, forecasting, invoicing and cost control duties across projects including creating and presenting project scopes, schedules, and budget.

  • Internal Coordination: Interface with Development Engineering, Legal, Policy, Project Finance, EPC, and executive team members to accurately define and mitigate project risks keep projects on track and on budget.

  • Periodic travel to meet with customers and key stakeholders, and as needed for project development.

Qualifications

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience; master’s degree preferred.

  • A minimum of four (4) years of experience in renewables project development; experience in WECC & CAISO is highly preferred.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the policy, regulatory and competitive dynamics that contribute to project profitability and viability for Solar and Storage projects.

  • Strong relationship management skills, and track record of success at managing internal and external technical experts.

  • Strong project management skills, and able to flexibly manage work across multiple distinct projects.

  • Self-motivated with a high level of initiative, attention to detail and accountability. Ability to multi-task and work in a deadline driven environment.

  • Interested in joining a dynamic, value-building environment, and being part of a high-performing and collaborative team.

  • Able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

  • Proficiency in using MS Office Suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
