We are seeking an experienced Senior Genetic Counselor to join the UTHealth Houston Department of Neurology in Houston, Texas 77030. In this role you will be providing advanced genetic counseling services with a specialization in specific areas of Neurology. This role involves working independently with minimal supervision, writing research paper drafts with little supervision, contributing to programmatic development, and providing leadership in the management and mentoring of early-career genetic counselors and assistants. Previous related research experience is a plus.

Position Summary:

The Senior Genetic Counselor will provide advanced genetic counseling services with a specialization in specific areas of neurology, including providing precision medicine recommendations to the neurologists. This role involves working independently with minimal supervision, writing research paper drafts with little supervision, contributing to programmatic development, and providing leadership in the management and mentoring of early career genetic counselors and assistants.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Delivers expert genetic counseling in neurology, including providing recommendations to neurologists for genetic variant enhanced care.

  • Interprets complex genetic testing results, providing comprehensive recommendations to patients and healthcare providers.

  • Writes advanced drafts of scientific manuscripts on neurogenetics topics with little supervision.

  • Leads program development and contribute to policy formulation in the field of genetic counseling on a national level.

  • Mentors and supervises early career genetic counselors and assistants in counselling and research, encouraging their professional growth.

  • Implements quality improvement initiatives and uphold ethical standards in genetic counseling.

  • Manages Human Resources activities of department in regards to: recruiting and selection, hiring and termination, training, professional development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

  • ABGC - American Board of Genetic Counseling Current board certification or board eligibility by the American Board of Medical Genetics or American Board of Genetic Counselors required.

  • At least two first authorship publications in peer reviewed journal with focus on genetic or neurological disorders.

  • Demonstrated expertise in specialized areas of genetics and precision medicine.

  • Works autonomously with little supervision, showcasing exceptional decision-making and problem-solving skills.

Minimum Education:

  • Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited program required

Minimum Experience:

  • 2 years experience in genetic counseling for neurological disorders required

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.

Residency Requirement:

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
